Incredible Start to the season

It looks like the snow fall records may fall this year with over 250cm of snow already falling in Furano and even more in Niseko. It is bucketing white powder snow on the resorts. With the new Niseko Hirafu Gondola station opening many early bird skiers are taking advantage of the excellent conditions. Epic Powder Falls in December - Niseko and Furano!

Santa has delivered with over a meter of snowfall in Furano and almost too much to measure in Niseko! Visitors to Furano have been delighted to find ample fresh snow with almost no lift closures due to weather. We have been treated to a few glorious (if frosty) blue sky mornings. Here's hoping for more great snow as this Hokkaido ski season kicks into full gear.

It is not long until New Years. There is nothing like waking up to a mountain full of Fresh Powder, skiing all day and then sipping some champagne whilst welcoming in the New Year with fireworks on the slopes. The scene is breathtaking.

First Snow Falls in Hokkaido - Two Weeks Early

As evening temperatures dip into the low single digits, the mountains are bursting with reds, oranges, and yellows. The elusive “yuki-mushi”, or “snow bugs”, considered to be harbingers of the first snows, have already been spotted at ground level.

The nearby highest peaks of Asahidake (Hokkaido’s highest) and Tokachidake (home of the highest drivable point on the island) have received their first dustings of snow weeks ago, but Typhoon #18 has given us something even better. We don’t get many typhoons up here in Hokkaido and I’ve always wondered what would happen if one of those warm, wet masses of air passed through our chilly autumn skies. The results were inspiring - early snows on Ashibetsu-dake and even Nishi-dake, home to Furano Ski Hill. Asahidake Onsen is reporting accumulation of 4-5 cm at the base of their ski area. Spring Skiing - 20 Mar 2009

Incredible prices, No crowds and a huge snow base.

As April rapidly approaches we still have plenty of snow in Furano and Niseko. Excellent spring skiing can be found on both mountains with a huge snow base. The latest news coming from the resorts is that several of the lifts will be closed but most of the mountain's will still be open and all the ski runs are still accessible. Better still no one is on the slopes so you will have them to yourself. We are approaching the midway point of the Hokkaido ski season. There is more than 3 meters of snow in Niseko, and nearly a 2 meter base in Furano. February is usually a great month for lots of fresh snow, and also starts the famous Bluebird days in Furano, with snow at night and sunshine in the day time.

The 2008-2009 Ski Season is officially open. Both Niseko and Furano opened Saturday, 22 November with limited operations. Both resorts report approximately a 60 cm base on the top of the mountain. There will surely be much more snowfall in the coming weeks.

Preparations are complete at Fresh Powder. We are ready to welcome you to your best ski/snowboard vacation ever!

Jed Beck

We are pleased to welcome Jed Beck from New Zealand to the Fresh Powder team this season. Jed will be managing our Niseko property. in between getting a few turns in on his snowboard. Jed's snowboard skills were honed many years ago on the beginne slopes of New Zealands north and south island before he progressed to the full powder hound he is now. You will not miss Jed on the slopes this year as his imposing 6 foot 4 frame hurtling down the mountain, in between trees.
