JR Hokkaido railways operate an extensive network of trains throughout Hokkaido. The trains are very well maintained and rarely ever experience delays. These factors make it an attractive method of travelling not only around Hokkaido but also throughout Japan in its entirety. For arriving international guests JR Railway operate the “Limited Express Super White Arrow” train direct from Chitose International Airport to Takikawa or direct from Chitose International airport to Asahikawa 9 times daily. At one of these two stations you can transfer to the local train to Furano. Both options are very convenient. Alternatively you can take the train from Sapporo and transfer to the local train at Takikawa Station or via Asahikawa station. In the summer months of June to August the Furano Lavender Express operates directly from Sapporo Station to Furano Station

Route Map

JR Hokkaido Railways has produced an excellent route map for its extensive route network on the northern island of Hokkaido. The map is well laid out and clearly depicts all its routes and the numerous towns and cities it services. Once travelers are on the train a map corresponding to the route map can usually be found on the interior of the carriages above the entry/exit doors. We have taken the liberty of creating a train route map for travelers wishing to travel from either Sapporo or New Chitose Airport directly to Furano. Please click directly on the pictures to enlarge them.

Timetables:

Please visit the JR Hokkaido website for the latest time tables of trains in Hokkaido. For more information on the timetables please click here. It is important to note that the train schedules may alter depending upon the weather so it is always wise to re-check schedules directly with JR Hokkaido railways prior to travel. For more help and information on any of these options please feel free to email info@freshpowder.com.

Where to Purchase Tickets:

The train line is called JR and is located in the airport terminal with directions to the train platforms are well signed in English (just look for the JR Line). Tickets need to be purchased before boarding - see the counter near the platform. Express trains are available, and although this option is a little more expensive it can save you considerable time. Express trains also offer reserved seats for an additional fee. Reservations can be made at any JR office. Please note that Fresh Powder is not able to provide bookings for the JR Train system.
