Located only 15 minutes out of Asahikawa and 60 minutes from Furano, the Asahiyama Zoo is one of the most famous and popular zoo’s in Japan. The zoo is easily accessible by taxi, local bus or private car. Once at the zoo guests can meander around the exhibits and watch the animals. The zoo distributes a timetable to guests for viewing feeding times. Several companies offer day trips from Furano to the zoo and return.
By far the most popular exhibit at the zoo is the King Penguin walk. The penguins are treated to a morning and afternoon walk around the entire zoo. The edge of the penguin walk is lined with tourists eager to get close. We recommend finding a position early to ensure a good viewing point. When the penguins are not walking they can also be viewed in the 360° see through walkway. The polar bear enclosure as been carefully designed to allow viewing of the bears above and below the water. The exhibit is particularly good at feeding time, but it does get crowded. Other animals on housed in the zoo are seals, lions, tigers, brown bears, antelope, deer and many animals native to Hokkaido. Although the winter experience at the zoo is excellent be prepared for many animals to be hibernating.
During summer monkey mountain and orangutan tower provides hours of entertainment. In addition a petting zoo that operates in the zoo from early May to late October is a big hit with children, as they can get up close and personal to many varieties of animals. A roller coaster also operates during this period. The zoo is open from 0930 – 1715 from late April to late October to take advantage of the longer daylight hours. Whilst the early sunsets in winter reduce the opening hours to 1030 – 1530 most days. The zoo is closed on certain public holidays so we recommending checking before you visit.
