Furano is synonymous with good food and great local hospitality. Any visit to Furano is not complete without sampling some of the mouth watering cuisine served in the local restaurants. Furano has over 200 restaurants in the area. Below is just a small sample of some of our favourites. For a more complete list please visit the Furano Tourism website.

A long-time favourite among locals and tourists alike, chef Masaya delights his guests with delicious dishes, wonderful personality, and outstanding performance. Masaya first settled down in the Furano area over 10 years ago, falling in love with the area while touring all of Japan by motorcycle. What originally started as a simple okonomi-yaki (Japanese savoury pancake) restaurant has developed into a hotspot of local cuisine, with a number of original teppan-yaki dishes making use of special local ingredients, such as his signature fluffy mashed potato okonomi-yaki and flaming pork sparerib. In addition to great food, many guests enjoy hearing about Furano and other parts of Japan while the chef cooks in front of their eyes.

Just a 5 minute walk from Fresh Powder, Tyrol specializes in the mouthwatering art of "Genghis Khan" style lamb BBQ. As one of Hokkaido’s signature dishes, juicy lamb and mountains of vegetables are piled onto an iron skillet and served with a special dipping sauce. Various cuts of lamb and styles of sauce are all carefully prepared by head chef Kojima, who is also a professional alpine snowboarder. In addition to their specialty, the menu includes bibimbap (a Korean rice dish, served sizzling in a hot stoneware bowl) and their own original "Hell Curry". Upstairs a cozy bar / café offers a relaxing chalet atmosphere for an after-dinner beverage or dessert.

Named after the endangered black-crested woodpecker unique to the area, Kumagera fittingly dishes up original cuisine found nowhere else. The self-proclaimed pioneer of “Furano Cuisine”, chef Morimoto takes pride in a number of dishes using choice local ingredients, such as the Sanzoku Nabe (Bandit’s Hot Pot), a hearty miso stew with fresh venison, duck, and chicken. Shabu-shabu style hot pot is available with meats such as lamb, venison, and even bear. (Subject to availability!) Simple but equally impressive is the Wagyu Sashimi Don, a rice bowl topped with raw slices of prime Furano wagyu beef. The Kumagera brand original Japanese sake is highly recommended.

Furano’s central location makes fresh seafood readily available from a number of coasts just hours away. Diners can expect to enjoy the freshest and finest Hokkaido crab, oysters, scallops, sea urchin (uni), salmon, and salmon caviar (ikura). Also highly recommended are the melt-in-your-mouth flame-broiled salmon and scallop sushi – just ask for “aburi-yaki”. Fish-free and cooked sushi options round out the menu, including somewhat unconventional local ingredients such as fresh asparagus and cheese. This restaurant is also great for kids, with a number of fried dishes, noodles, soups, desserts, and an all-you-can-drink soft drink bar.

Hokkaido is well-known for its high quality soba buckwheat noodles. Furano is no exception with a number of soba restaurants throughout the area. We’d like to introduce a little neighborhood shop just around the corner from Fresh Powder. Tamaya is easily recognized by the waterwheel in front of the store and the stuffed bear greeting you inside! The noodles are 100% handmade with freshly-ground local buckwheat flour. Local favourites include tempura soba, served with a sizzling prawn tempura in the soup, and the Kashiwa-soba, distinctly flavoured with a rich chicken broth. To indulge in Soba noodles you simply have to “slurp” the noodles into your mouth loudly. Trust us you will not feel out of place.

Reminiscent of a tree house, this historical downtown restaurant dishes up one of Furano’s oldest and most loved curry recipes. Curry has recently become a buzzword in Furano, but it’s been long known that the local onions, potatoes, and carrots lend a decadent sweetness to stews and curries. Dokuson’s curry is simple yet rich, spicy but not harsh. Extra sauce is free of charge. The great success of Yuiga Doxon has led to another restaurant in Kitanomine, just 5 minutes walk from Fresh Powder. Best known for its microbrew Furano Beer label, Yama no Doxon also features a bakery, homemade sausage, and a complete family menu including pizza and pasta.

Ramen noodle soup is a ubiquitous favourite throughout Japan, with nearly every region having its own unique variation. Although there are over a dozen ramen restaurants in Furano alone, asking a local which to try will invariably lead to one answer – the old-fashioned ramen at historical Mikazuki dining hall. Once used as a set for the extremely popular TV drama, “Kita no Kuni kara”, the historical restaurant’s walls are adorned with signatures of past and present TV stars. The simple and elegant ramen features hand-made noodles and a clear, savoury soy-based soup. We recommend going early as they sell out almost every day.
