The northern island of Hokkaido is separated from the main island of Honshu by the pacific ocean. Centrally located in Hokkaido is the capital city Sapporo. The island of Hokkaido is serviced by New Chitose International Airport, located about forty minutes to the south of Sapporo in the city of Chitose. The airport is known by several names including Sapporo International Airport, Chitose International Airport or New Chitose Airport. The IATA code for the airport is SPK. Chitose International Airport receives flights from many international destinations within Asia and a number of major domestic Japanese carriers operate connecting flights through the airports of Tokyo-Haneda, Osaka-Kansai, Nagoya and many more. We strongly recommend that visitors check with their travel itinerary if transiting through Tokyo, as the Tokyo domestic airport, Haneda, is over an hour travel time from the Tokyo International airport of Narita.
Air do is a domestic Japanese airline that operates from Tokyo Haneda airport to Sapporo’s Chitose Airport. As one of Japan’s major domestic and international carriers ANA services both Asahikawa airport and New Chitose Airport from many connecting cities within Japan. Connecting flights from Osaka or Haneda to Hokkaido provide the best options.
From its home base in Hong Kong China, Cathay Pacific operates four times a week from direct to Sapporo. For guests visiting from Australia or New Zealand Cathay Pacific offers many connecting flights with a layover in Hong Kong.
Based in Taipei, Taiwan, China Airlines has over sixty aircraft servicing Australia, Taiwan, Japan and many other destinations throughout Asia. Connecting flights from Australia usually involve a layover in the city of Taipei before continuing onto Japan. China airlines services Sapporo Chitose International airport several times a week from Taipei.

Qantas is Australia's leading domestic carrier and one of the world's premier long haul airlines. Qantas operates 31 flights a week between four Australian cities (Cairns, Melbourne, Perth and Sydney) to Tokyo Japan. Qantas also operates a codeshare with JAL, offering 14 services a week between Australia and Japan.
