Niseko Attractions

Niseko offers a number of attractions very close to Fresh Powder Apartments.

Mount Yotei-zan

This extinct volcano towers over the Niseko Hirafu village, providing an incredible backdrop. Due to its similar appearance it is commonly mistaken by foreigners in photos as Mt Fuji, in fact the local name is "Ezo Fuji" which roughly translates as "Hokkaido's Fuji". The kanji character for Yotei means sheep - when you look at the top of the mountain there are three vent holes positioned such to make the shape of a sheep's hoof; each of the holes have a name being Father (largest), Mother (second largest) and the Son being the smallest. In summer it is an excellent hike to the top of the mountain and a few companies run tours to the base of the mountain in winter.

Onsens

The Niseko region is famous for its natural thermal hot springs, rising from deep within the ground. The thermal baths are renowned for their therapeutic and healing qualities. They provide a rejuvenating experience usually towards the end of the day. An Onsen is a wonderful way to participate in an ancient Japanese tradition. However strict etiquette must be adhered to. All bathing is done in the nude and the idea is to simply relax in the soothing water. The majority of Onsen’s provide separate areas for men and women. More information on the location of the onsen can be found on the Japanese website Niseko Walker.

Lake Toya

Made famous in 2008 by hosting the international G8 summit, this oasis is a spectacular place to visit. The picturesque lake and Shikotsu-Toya national park form the centre piece of a remarkable landscape. Lake Toya has considerable geothermal activity so it never freezes over. The lake is revered in Japan for the purity of its water and the minerals it contains, which can be experience by soaking in one of the Onsens operating nearby the lake. The nearby Mt Usu is an active volcano with the last major eruption occurring in 2000. Since then the mountain has been dormant but it is a good place to see geothermal clouds emanating from the earth.

Rusutsu Theme Park

Rusutsu is approximately 45 minutes away from Niseko by car in summer. The Rusutsu amusement park offers no less than 8 roller coasters, 8 thrill rides and an assortment of other attractions for children of all ages. A water park complete with a lazy river pool encompassing a large wave pool is ideal to take advantage of the warm summer days. In winter the resort offers dog sledding, snow showing, a well designed cross country circuit and for children a large size kids park with magic carpet, 60m ice slide, toboggan course, an introductory downhill course and a gentle ski slope exclusively available for children in the park.
